My favorite beach in São Miguel — and one of the most authentic places on the island.
Ribeira Quente Beach is, without a doubt, my favorite beach in São Miguel Island.
Like many people living in Ponta Delgada, I don’t hesitate to drive about one hour just to spend time there. It’s not the closest beach — but it’s definitely one of the most special.
And surprisingly, most travel guides don’t really highlight it.
🚗 How to get to Ribeira Quente
To reach Ribeira Quente, you’ll need to go through Furnas, either from the north or the south.
👉 The south road is by far the most beautiful.
It follows the coastline and offers stunning views over the ocean, including the famous Vila Franca do Campo islet.
But the most magical part begins after Furnas.
The road becomes almost enchanting, with tunnels carved into the mountain. If you pay attention, you can even spot a beautiful waterfall on the right, just between two tunnels.
🌄 Arrival at the village
Arriving in Ribeira Quente is a unique experience.
The village feels completely different from anywhere else on the island. Nestled between the mountains and the ocean, it has a special charm that is hard to describe.
You could almost imagine a small Mediterranean-style village — like a hidden Saint-Tropez — but surrounded by wild nature.
🏖️ Ribeira Quente Beach
The real highlight is, of course, the beach.
Ribeira Quente offers a beautiful sandy beach set in a dramatic mountain landscape. It has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere — but also something truly unique.
👉 In some areas, the water is naturally warm.
This comes from volcanic activity beneath the island. You’ll quickly notice where it happens: people tend to stay in the same spots — that’s where the water is warmer.

☀️ Practical tips
- There is a large parking area right next to the beach
- Access is very easy, just a few steps from the car
- If you arrive early, you can often find free straw umbrellas
- There is a great beach bar/restaurant with a view over the ocean
👉 It’s a very comfortable beach compared to others on the island.

🌊 A true local favorite
What makes Ribeira Quente special is its atmosphere.
It’s not just a beach — it’s a place where locals come to relax, away from the more crowded and touristy spots.
Compared to beaches like Praia das Milícias or Santa Bárbara, Ribeira Quente feels more authentic and less exposed.
And honestly… maybe that’s a good thing.
⚓ The fishing harbor and local vibe
On your way back, you’ll pass a small fishing harbor.
It has a very authentic Azorean atmosphere — simple, quiet, and real.
There is also a restaurant near the port that I personally find better than many others on the island… but for now, I’ll let you discover it by yourself.
🥾 From Ribeira Quente to Povoação
Ribeira Quente is located close to Povoação, on the other side of the mountain.
A hiking trail connects the two villages.
👉 But be careful — this is a real hike, not a simple walk.
If you enjoy nature and adventure, it’s definitely worth exploring.
🎯 Conclusion
Ribeira Quente is more than just a beach — it’s an experience.
With its stunning setting, warm water spots, and authentic atmosphere, it’s one of the most unique places in São Miguel.
For me, it remains my favorite beach on the island.
